I'm Coach Steve, not an elite level swimmer,
but I've done well for someone who began swimming in his late thirties.
I consider my late start an advantage for swim coaching as I understand
the challenges of learning swim technique as an adult. Swimmers who began
as kids usually don't need as much help, just ongoing motivation! I never learned to swim as a kid. I don't know exactly why, but it's a fact. It's not that I was afraid of the water, I just never learned the technique. My High School has a pool and there's a swim requirement for PE class to graduate. I may be the only one not to pass as I never took the test (true). I missed the last few weeks of school, including swim tests and graduation while competing at the Junior World Cycling Championships in Belgium. They gave me a diploma anyway. In the mid-nineties I was racing the Duathlon World Championship in Cancun and the Triathlon Championship was the following weekend so I stayed to watch. The ocean was clear and beautiful and the swim looked like fun; I felt like I was missing something. A friend from bike racing days won both the du and tri championship in his age group on consecutive weekends. I was impressed, and for the first time motivated to begin swimming. The next summer I taught myself to swim as soon as the ocean was warm enough to jump in with a wetsuit. I'm sure it wasn't pretty, but I was out there swimming and moving pretty well! Now I compete in triathlon at the elite age group level, participating in the Olympic distance National and World Championship every year. |
